UNIT 1: Music Makers: In this unit, we talk about music making in different cultures. Throughout this study, we will cover common characteristics of music making such as form, instrumentation, and notation.
SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN: In this unit, we will watch what has been coined the greatest musical of all time - Singin’ in the Rain. The students will then do a research project on four of the stars of the film: Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, Debbie Reynolds, and Cyd Charisse. Once the research is completed, the students will put together a baseball card for each actor/actress with a picture on the front and their “stats” on the back.
UNIT 2: Musical Adventures- In this unit, we will travel the world and time. Each musical adventure we take will introduce and reinforce concepts such as rhythm, pitch, texture, and music history.
Musical Theater: This unit focuses on CATS, the musical. We take the time in class to watch and discuss it. Then, the students create a pamphlet about the CATS musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber (the composer), and T.S. Eliot (the lyricist).
UNIT 3: The Keyboard Connection: This unit focuses on different keyboard instruments and the different styles and genres of music the keyboard has seen since it’s invention. This unit is used as a platform for talking about several classical and baroque period composers.

EUROPEAN COMPOSERS: In this unit, the students will delve deeply into the life of a European composer of their choice. They will do a research based project on the life and music of that person and then present their findings to the class in the form of a Keynote presentation.
